Privatizing Pensions

To what extent do international organizations, global policy networks, and transnational policy entrepreneurs influence domestic policy makers? Have we entered a new phase of globalization that, unbeknownst to most citizens, shapes policies that used to be the sole domain of domestic politics? Privatizing Pensions reveals how international institutions--such as the World Bank, USAID, and other transnational policy actors--have played a seminal role in the development, diffusion, and implementation of new pension reforms that are transforming the postwar social contract in more than thirty countries worldwide, including the United States. Mitchell Orenstein shows how transnational actors have driven change in a policy area once thought to be beyond reform in many countries, and how they have done so by deploying their unique resources and legitimacy to promote new ideas, recruit disciples worldwide, and provide a broad range of technical assistance to government reformers over the long term. He demonstrates that while domestic decision makers may retain veto power over these reforms--which replace traditional social security with individual pension savings accounts--transnational policy makers play the role of "proposal actors," shaping the information, preferences, and resources of their domestic clients. Privatizing Pensions argues that even the most quintessentially domestic areas of policy have been thoroughly globalized, and that these international influences must be better understood.

New Retirement

In 'The New Retirement', global economic strategist Sherry Cooper explains that the boomer generation will be reaching traditional retirement age very soon and the enormous wave of boomer retirees will crest in 2025. This phenomenon will profoundly affect the labour markets, the economy, and financial markets for decades. But will boomers retire the way their parents did? Will they work longer and transition gradually into semi-retirement? Cooper tells us that boomers will redefine retirement with great energy and creativity, working well beyond age 65 and mostly by choice. With the dramatic rise in their longevity, healthy goal-driven boomers will seek purposeful leisure focusing on regeneration, rejuvenation, and low-stress contributions to society and their own personal wealth. Follow Cooper through her own journey to discover the route to financial security in this engaging and insightful read. Learn how the new retirement is about living well while achieving both monetary security and your personal goals. The New Retirement is an indispensable roadmap to the best years of your life.

Sustainability of Pension Systems in the New EU Member States and Croatia is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. This study finds that pension reforms in recent years have improved the efficiency and sustainability of pension systems in the new member states of the European Union and Croatia. However, for many countries, these probably have not gone far enough to ensure long-term sustainability, given the aging of the population. Reforms have included changes to Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) systems, including increases in retirement ages (not at least for women), new benefit formulas, and new indexation mechanism. Some countries (Latvia and Poland) have further strengthened the link of contributions and benefits to the sustainability of the PAYG system through the introduction of national defined contribution accounts. The link is strengthened also by moving to a point system, which has been adopted by many of the countries. Several countries have introduced a second, private, pension pillar, funded through diversion of part of the pension contributions, thereby diversifying risk. However, some countries (in particular the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Romania) will need to do more to safeguard the long-term viability of their pension systems, while others face challenges to ensure equitable pension systems and adequate living standards for all elderly people.

Ready...Set...Retire!

Most investors spend too much time trying to outguess the market and not enough time thinking about their long-term financial futures. That’s why today’s retirees (and soon-to-be retirees) need strategies, not stock tips. Nationally recognized Certified Financial Planner®, radio talk-show personality, and author Raymond J. Lucia shows you little-known concepts that can fatten your savings and boost your standard of living in retirement. In an easy-to-understand and often humorous style, Lucia details how ideas such as nontraded real estate investment trusts, 72(t) elections, and equity-indexed annuities can give you, the investor, a leg up on the path to retiring in comfort and safety. Lucia brings his 30 years of experience to bear in revealing how and when to tap your retirement plans, ways to use your home as a source of retirement dollars, and how to lower taxes on appreciated company stock. He’ll also explain how investing in low-income housing tax credits can help you tax-wise even as you assist others. Filled with hands-on, in-depth insights and practical advice, this book will give you all the tools you need to win at the retirement game.

Retirate Joven y Rico / Retire Young and Rich

Are your financial plans on the fast track or the slow track? If you are like most, retiring early sounds great; more time to do what really interests you. To get on the fast track, you need to leverage your mind, your plan and your actions. In Retire Young Retire Rich, Kiyosaki details how he and his wife Kim achieved financial freedom in less than ten years. More importantly, he shows how a context shift in your mind allows you to create a plan that formulates the actions necessary for your financial freedom. Description i Spanish: "etirarse joven y rico?

The Veteran's Survival Guide

"Claim denied!" All too often millions of veterans have received this response to their legitimate claims for federal benefits. In most cases, writes veterans' advocate John D. Roche, the claimant didn't understand the procedures needed to meet the myriad requirements of the Department of Veterans Affairs. With the appeals process requiring years to resolve disputes, deserving veterans and their dependents are left confused and frustrated by the agency and a system that was created to serve them. The answer is to submit a well-grounded claim initially, which The Veteran's Survival Guide, now in a revised, second edition, analyzes in detail. This unique book, written in an accessible self-help style, will be required reading for any veteran or veteran's dependent who wishes to obtain his or her well-earned benefits and for those officials of veterans' service organizations who assist veterans with their claims.
The often-avoided, anxiety-riddled discussion about financial planning for a secure and fulfilling future has been given a new starting point in The Number by Lee Eisenberg. The buzz of professionals and financial industry insiders everywhere, the Number represents the amount of money and resources people will need to enjoy the active life they desire, especially post-career.
With all of the competing information in the news these days about howand whetherto reform Social Security, how is a concerned citizen to know which is the right path? Arthur Benavie gives readers the tools necessary to make decisions on this subject that they will not regret. The U.S. public has been offered false information on this issue, told that Social Security is going bankrupt unless it is reformed immediately. Benavie refutes these arguments and separates the economic facts from ideological value judgments. This updated edition is an invaluable guide to understanding and making informed decisions about Social Security.

50 Fabulous Places to Retire in America

Updated and revised to include the top 50 communities in the country, complete with an interactive, searchable CD-rom. 50 Fabulous Places to Retire in America, Third Edition has the answers to one of the biggest questions you'll ever ask yourself: Where am I going to live when I retire? For some, the answer is as simple as right here, of course. However, for those adventurous souls who find themselves deliciously intrigued by the notion of going somewhere else after retirement, or even for those who are only considering a move, this book will prove to be an entertaining—and invaluable—resource. With his engaging and congenial style, author Arthur Griffith describes 50 of the most attractive, accessible, and outright fabulous places to retire in the United States: lovely, welcoming, convenient, soul-satisfying, warm, sunny, cold, snowy, desert, mountainous, plains, ocean-front, big-city, small-town, way-out wilderness, or just-around-the-corner locations to call home. The book also includes an easy-to-use, interactive CD containing a wealth of information to make your search that much easier— and a lot more fun! Do you want to raise exotic orchids? Want to breed miniature horses? Want to sit by the ocean and count the eagles flying? Looking for the best country-western town? The best golfing for the money? The most shopping per square foot? How about hunting, fishing, and trapping? No matter how specific and unique your desires are, this comprehensive book covers it all! And for the more practical reader who needs concrete facts and figures, look no further: From annual precipitation to sample costs of residency, you will find numbers and statistics to warm the heart of the most detail-oriented economist in the house. Over the past several years, Arthur Griffith has lived all over the United States as a radio broadcaster, an engineer, and a computer consultant. He has authored 12 books, and currently teaches online from his home on the (unpaved) North Fork Road near Anchor Point, Alaska. He lives there with his wife, Mary, and their two cats, Captain Editor and Miss Effie. Occasionally, he may be found directing or acting in local community theatre productions.
Structured regionally rather than alphabetically, this revised and updated edition enables readers to search similar options based on general areas in both the United States and Canada.

Get a Life

The financial-service industry wants you to believe that in order to avoid financial destitution, you need to put aside huge amounts of money that you -- let's say it together -- "should have begun saving years ago." Not true, states Warner, the author of Get a Life. Although a sensible savings plan makes good horse sense, many other actions and decisions will determine whether you enjoy your retirement years. Get a Life shows you how to beat the anxiety surrounding retirement, and to develop a plan to make your golden years the best of your life by: * developing family relationships * maintaining and creating friendships * improving health * keeping active * developing a robust curiosity for the world * realistically calculating how much money you need and how to secure it Interviews with successful (and successfully) retired people illustrate how to put Warner's advice into action.

The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974

This study of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) explains in detail how public officials in the executive branch and Congress overcame strong opposition from business and organized labor to pass landmark legislation regulating employer-sponsored retirement and health plans. Before Congress passed ERISA, federal law gave employers and unions great discretion in the design and operation of employee benefit plans. Most importantly, firms and unions could and often did establish pension plans that placed employees at great risk for not receiving any retirement benefits. In the early 1960s, officials in the executive branch proposed a number of regulatory initiatives to protect employees, but business groups and most labor unions objected to the key proposals. Faced with opposition from powerful interest groups, legislative entrepreneurs in Congress, chiefly New York Republican senator Jacob K. Javits, took the case for pension reform directly to voters by publicizing frightening statistics and "horror stories" about pension plans. This deft and successful effort to mobilize the media and public opinion overwhelmed the business community and organized labor and persuaded Javits's colleagues in Congress to support comprehensive pension reform legislation. The enactment of ERISA in September 1974 recast federal policy for private pension plans by making worker security an overriding objective of federal law.

The Retirement Nightmare

After working hard to build your nest egg, you are finally making plans for your retirement years. But will you be free to make your own choices when those golden years finally arrive? Or will you fall victim to ruinously expensive involuntary conservatorship/guardianship proceedings and be stripped of your rights, your money, your independence -- for the rest of your life? In an onimous trend that threatens America's successfully aging population, state judges are imposing an increasing number of unwanted conservators and guardians upon allegedly incompetent men and women to manage their property and personal affairs. The results are grim. In New York alone, judges appointed over 32,000 guardianships during 1997, up from 15,000 in 1992, and Michigan's guardianship petitions have more than quadrupled since 1981. These little-known state laws were originally created to safeguard the rights of "infants and lunatics." Today, involuntary conservatorship and guardianship laws are being used by calculating heirs to seize control of their parents' assets and by protectors in the social welfare community to control the vulnerable elderly themselves. And who is "elderly"? To be declared incompetent on the basis of age you only have to be 62. Drawing on sadly typical cases from courtrooms across America, Dr. Armstrong shows how competent elders can be victimized by arbitrary conservatorships and guardianships. She describes the historical roots of our codes and shows how they function in today's courts, highlighting concepts that are problematic and suggesting appropriate changes. Dr. Armstrong summarizes every state's conservatorship/guardianship statutes and provides contact numbers for national services, legal organizations, state offices of aging, and other resources for the elderly. Most importantly, her breakthrough book gives YOU the tools you will need to protect yourself or someone you love when your retirement years usher in the real threat of predatory litigation.

Revitalizing Retirement: Reshaping Your Identity, Relationships, and Purpose

In preparation for retirement, we are often urged to build up our financial portfolio or perhaps down-size our home or move closer to family. Often neglected in this process, however, are the psychological ramifications that come with the transition into retirement. It is important for retirees to make a plan for their retirement financially, but also to take stock of their psychological portfolio at the same time. This means taking an honest look at how your sense of identity will change with retirement, how your relationships and support systems may change, and how your sense of purpose will be affected. PiRevitalizing Retirement/i gives unique guidance on how to create a happy, fulfilling retirement. Nancy K. Schlossberg, a counseling psychologist and author of iRetire Smart, Retire Happy/i, describes the secret to a happy retirement. She encourages readers to reshape their identity, relationships, and purpose. She discusses several coping skills that deal with accepting change and help retirees continue to feel that they are vital members of their community and that they matter. PEach chapter contains stories from actual retirees that demonstrate the numerous ways of pursuing an enjoyable retirement. There are short quizzes and discussion questions at the end of each chapter so that readers can reflect on what they have read and see exactly how it relates to their own lives. This book is a must-read for anyone considering retirement in the near future as well as current retirees who may be struggling to find happiness in their daily lives.

The Experience of Retirement

Retirement brings with it the promises of leisure and freedom as well as the risks of boredom and isolation. When retirees rid their schedules of anything resembling the kinds of obligations that once had been imposed by work, they will experience a sometimes-uncomfortable absence of structure. In The Experience of Retirement, the distinguished sociologist Robert S. Weiss provides a detailed description of how some people plan their retirement, what life in retirement is like, and what makes for a fulfilling retirement. His engaging book can thus serve as a most useful guide. Weiss shows us both retirement’s benefits and its possible costs, both the relief retirees can feel once free of work’s stresses and constraints and the discomfort that can be caused by loss of the positive aspects of working life. PThe book is based on extensive interviews with eighty-nine men and women before and after their retirement from middle-income careers. Weiss makes vivid their experiences by presenting, in their own words, their descriptions of leaving their careers, considering what to do with their time, confronting issues of income in retirement, dealing—sometimes—with social isolation, and reorganizing their lives. The interviews reveal the way in which retirement affects marriages and other familial relationships. Weiss concludes by presenting advice about retirement based on the actual experiences of retirees. For anyone approaching the age of retirement or already retired and looking for a more satisfying post-career life, for personnel managers, health care professionals, and all those who provide services for the retired, The Experience of Retirement will be an illuminating guidebook to this phase of life.

Are you ready for retirement? How can individuals plan for the gradual shift from working to retirement? How can they make the psychological transition from working to not working? Many retirees become ill within a year of leaving work because they fail to plan for a gradual shift from working to retirement. Individuals with outside interests are at less risk than people who spend 60 hours a week on the job, but even hobbies and interests have to be refined prior to retirement. For many people, one of the most profound periods of change is their time of retirement. People's needs and attitudes and different, however, no matter what their personal goals, current age and economic circumstances may be, the strategies they employ to plan for a satisfying retirement are crucial to their mental happiness, physical health and general survival. These strategies will either enhance the quality of their golden years or shorten them drastically.

Retiring as a Career: Making the Most of Your Retirement

Every year, millions of Americans retire--and many of them wonder what went wrong. What they envisioned as a graceful pirouette into the golden years often leads instead to a rude awakening. Why? We all know about financial planning for retirement, but emotional and social planning is just as important. This book deals with the issues of purpose and structure, self-esteem, emotional and social roles, resources, and the special issues of women who retire. Based on the results of a survey of successful retirees, it helps readers to learn from their experiences and benefit from their own hard-won wisdom. In many ways, today's retirees are pioneers, charting new courses for their unprecedented long futures. This book looks at the changing faces, definitions, and models of retirement in order to help those who are looking forward to their own. It enables readers to identify and avoid some of the typical pitfalls of retirement: moving too quickly from a fast-paced schedule to a life of total leisure; giving up home, friends, and community to move to a strange location; expecting your spouse to cooperate with your own retirement plans; and doing too much--or too little.

The Late Start Investor: The Better-Late-Than-Never Guide to Realizing Your Retirement Income

divThis is the first book of lifestyle and financial strategies fashioned expressly for those want to retire in fifteen years or less but have little or no money saved to do so.brbrLate-start investors are the 51 million baby boomers who don't have nearly enough money put aside for retirement. They envision life after work differently--to some it is those years to be spent playing with grandchildren on the beach, to others it's the freedom to travel or enjoy a hobby that may bring in a few dollars. There is one certainty however: Those Golden Years sure can't be lived on a mere $3,000, which is the average amount fifty-year-olds in this country have saved. But there is no need to panic. With its unique combination of facts, wisdom, questionnaires, and real-life anecdotes, The Late-Start Investor is the key to a future of secure fulfillment for those playing catch-up.brbrJohn Wasik's optimistic and effective advice does more than simply guide readers through the lifestyle assessment and planning; it also helps them create the "perfect" investment program for their vision of the future. His pointers reflect this group's need for limited risk, but keeps their dollars outpacing the ever-present enemy--inflation. The Late-Start Investor outlines what Social Security and pension funds contribute to the picture and how best to supplement them with stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. This book will give readers the confidence and knowledge to stop living in fear of the future and start saving for their dreams.br/div

The Beginner's Guide to Retirement: Taking Control of Your Future

At last - a retirement guide that deals with more than just the financial aspects of life after work. Many people live for their retirement but many others dread it. For the latter it is a time beset with depression, fear, anxiety and a sense of futility. There is no doubt that it can present an enormously stressful turning point in people's lives. However with some practical preparation we can reduce that stress and turn our retirement into the time of opportunity we all really hope it will be. 'The Beginner's Guide to Retirement' exposes the numerous myths that surround this time of our lives and explains why so many people are unprepared for it. It examines the many important areas of life usually overlooked when planning retirement, providing advice on relationships with partners and family, skills in conflict resolution, dealing with issues such as loss, and most importantly, living a full and happy life in retirement. The final chapter deals with one of the most powerful factors influencing retirement-based anxiety, that of maintaining financial stability and maximising existing financial circumstances. The step-by-step authoritative information is universal in its nature, including the final chapter on finance which is specially written to provide guidelines which are effective in any country. This book offers invaluable survival tools to cope with this life change and helps us take control of the rest of our lives.

How to Spend the Kids' Inheritance: All You Need to Know to Manage a Successful Retirement

The great thing about retirement options today is there are many new and exciting opportunities to choose from. Did you know, for example, that nearly as many 'oldies' are taking gap years as students? And, retirement villages and retirement apartments are now becoming the way of the future. They offer independence, security and 24 hour help, along with many other facilities for older people to enjoy. These developments embrace the concept that growing older doesn't mean compromising on your lifestyle. As with any important decision, retirement choices have to be all about research and the more you know the better off you will be. So take your time and explore all the options, as what you decide to do later, could affect your planning now.
